Our history

P R Hornsby & Company was formed in 1930 when Peter Leigh moved out of London to Hoddesdon and acquired part of the practice he was working at in the West End.

With the help of his former principal, Mr Leigh rented an office in Burford Street and started to act for local family-owned businesses in addition to those he acted for whilst in London. P R Hornsby & Company continued to practice from Burford Street right up to when we moved to our present address, The Old Mustard Pot, in March 2000.

After many years of being very active in the local community Mr Leigh sold his practice to Andy Higginson in the early 1990s. Andy started another practice in Colchester shortly thereafter and found that it was difficult to manage both practices as a sole-practitioner.

After looking at many practices over an 18 month period, P R Hornsby & Company was acquired by Wilson Croft in 1999.

The two practices were combined and the name P R Hornsby & Company retained. The practice still gives pertinent, quality advice to the local family-owned businesses, a legacy of Mr Leigh, which is still so relevant in this modern era.

The Old Mustard Pot not only has a great novelty factor in its name, but is also of historic interest. It is the second oldest building in Broxbourne and parts of the building date back to Henry VIII’s reign. Indeed during renovation in 1984 a black rat was found within the building’s walls and this can now be viewed in the Lowes Museum. You never know, you may even hear our very friendly resident ghost!
